Help the Police Help You

Despite the fact the many incidents of domestic abuse occur in private the police require the same level of evidence as they would for any other crime before they can arrest a person and submit a report to the Procurator Fiscal.

All calls made to the police are recorded however there may be other incidents which you do not initially report. In these circumstances it is vital that you keep a record which may be called upon if necessary at a later date. This information may also be useful to a solicitor if you decide to take further civil action against your partner.

Below is a list of detail which may be worthy of recording:

  • Date, time, place of incident(s)
  • Other adults who may have seen or heard something
  • Children present (where they were threatened or abused)
  • The exact description of the abusers behaviour
  • Emotional effect of the incident(s)How the children have reacted to the abuse since the incident
  • Detailed description of injuries caused
