Accessibility
Central Scotland Police is committed to providing accessible information on our website. This web page summarises some of the accessibility enhancements made to the site.
Changing the font size
Most Web browsers allow you to increase / decrease the font size as the Central Scotland Police website has been built to allow scaling of fonts'.
The instructions below for changing the font size are for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox but other browsers' will use a similar method to achieve this. If you are finding it difficult to do this for any other browser, please refer to the browser's help files.
Internet Explorer
- Click View.
- Roll over text size. This should display 5 optional ranging from smallest to largest.
- Select from the list the font size that suites you best.
Mozilla Firefox
- Click View.
- Roll over text size. This should display three options: increase; decrease; and normal. Normal will return to the browsers default text size but clicking increase or decrease will make the text larger and smaller respectively.
- Select the font size that suites you best.
Mozilla Firefox also has a quick method of altering the font size using keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts provide a quick means to using browser functions without the need to go through the menu procedure. To increase the font size, simply press and hold the Ctrl key followed by the plus key (+). Keep tapping the plus key whilst holding the Ctrl key to obtain the desired font size. To decrease the font size use Ctrl and minus key (-).
Alternative text provided for all images
This allows users with text-to-speech software to be able to interpret the content of an image on a web page by referring to the images alternative text. Not all web pages provide this and thus making it difficult for web users using specialist software to know what an image is showing.
By providing alternative text for images, this also allows web users to know what an image contains if they are using a browser that has no support for images of they simply have images turned off.
Web Standards
Ensuring a website complies with web standards is a major step towards ensuring a website is accessible to a wide audience of web users. This not only applies to people with disabilities, but also allowing web pages to be understood by people using browsers other than the most common ones. This includes voice browsers that read web pages aloud to people with sight impairments, Braille browsers that translate text into Braille, hand-held browsers with very little monitor space, teletext displays, and other unusual output devices.
A standards-compliant website will help ensure not only that traditional browsers, old and new, will all be able to present sites properly, but also that they will work with unusual browsers and media.
