Domestic Abuse Unit
We take the issue of domestic abuse extremely seriously and are aware that people who are victims require support and awareness of the resources available to them.
This awareness led to a post being developed in 1994. This post was specifically for the repeat victims of domestic assault and people who had contact with the police because of a domestic incident.
The Domestic Abuse Unit currently has three members of staff, Catriona Ferry and Susan Hannah who are both police staff and have a wealth of experience in dealing with all aspects of domestic abuse and detective constable Michelle Campbell. As a unit they respond to referrals from:
- Police
- Social work
- Health visitors
- Health workers
- Individual domestic abuse victims
What does the Domestic Abuse Unit offer?
- Practical and emotional support
- Arrange resources for people referred, ie referral to Women's Aid
- Arrange security resources for the victims home if the abusive partner has left
- Raise awareness of domestic abuse through training of police officers and various other agencies
- Supporting people through the housing system, court process, welfare benefits
- Offer information on various relevant issues, ie housing, interdicts, parental rights, financial issues, child protection issues
Ultimately the workers' aim is to offer choice to people who have been or still remain in an abusive relationship. This will empower them to make the best decision for themselves and their families.
If you would like more detailed information of the procedures we follow, Call 01324 678830 and ask to speak a member of staff at the Domestic Abuse Unit. You will be able to have an informal talk in confidence. The unit can arrange to meet you at a place of your choice.
